All four goals came in the final 25 minutes of the match, with Connor Woodford, Leroy Hewitt and Sam England getting on the scoresheet for the home side. The YC got a goal back through Sam Davison in injury time, however this proved to be only a consolation.
After a disappointing loss to Yarm & Eaglescliffe in their last outing, the visitors hoped to return to winning ways in their final away game of the campaign. Darlington on the other hand looked to ride on recent momentum and stretch their winning streak to an impressive five on the bounce.
Despite a relatively quiet first half, chances for both teams came in the final ten minutes of the period.
Prudhoe’s Michael Wright chopped inside the box and got a shot off which called Philip Pentony into action with a strong save.
Darlo then hit back and almost seized the lead on the stroke of half time. Town’s Will Maddison found Mason Hurworth who got a shot off at the edge of the box, and it was only Sam Wilson’s heroics in the YC net that kept the game level.
Going into the second period, the home team looked the better side and broke the deadlock in the 68th minute. An inviting cross from Lee Hastle was met by Woodford who headed home into the right corner.
Darlington then doubled their advantage on 78 minutes. Jim Wilson led a quick counter-attack before releasing Hewitt in on goal, with the substitute coolly finding the bottom right corner.
A few minutes later, Maddison nearly got on the scoresheet for Town. The number seven’s powerful effort from range rattled the crossbar, causing a scare for the away side.
With a few minutes of normal time to go, the YC nearly halved the deficit. Prudhoe’s Cam Toal curled in a teasing cross into the Darlo box, however Mavis Adaowo couldn’t direct his header away from the keeper.
Town’s third came shortly after this chance as England found the back of the net in the 90th minute. Following a miscued clearance from the visitors, England gathered the ball in the box and rattled home back across goal into the left corner.
Prudhoe came back with an instant response, making it 3-1 on 91 minutes. After a moment of uncertainty in Town’s box, Davison produced a great finish on the rebound.
Following back-to-back defeats, the YC will hope to round out the campaign with a strong performance on Friday night when they face Chester-le-Street Town at Essity Park 7:30pm ko.
