An own goal from the home side put the YC a goal to the good a quarter of an hour in. However, West End clawed back with David Hodgson’s equaliser later in the first half.
Although both sides had chances in the second period, the scoreline remained level.
Despite a loss to Whitley Bay in the cup in midweek, Prudhoe looked to extend their unbeaten run in the league to six games. On the other hand, the home team hoped to bounce back following a 4-2 loss to Alnwick Town last weekend.
With the clock at five minutes, Sunderland West End almost opened the scoring. Luke Page drove through the centre of the park before threading the ball out to Adam Stuart on the right flank. Luckily for the YC, the full back shot straight down the middle, keeping the game at 0-0.
In the 12th minute, the home side threatened again. West End winger Zouhair Benali won the ball back high up the pitch and got a shot off in the Prudhoe box, calling Liam Dalton into action with a strong block.
That said, the visitors took the lead minutes later. Brad Lowes worked the ball well into Matt Law at the edge of box, who then played it out to Darren Graham. From there, the right back’s dangerous pass across the face of goal was directed in by West End’s Stuart.
At 37 minutes, Sunderland West End earned a deserved breakthrough in the tie. Page chopped in field and laid to Hodgson, whose low strike fizzed into the bottom right corner.
As the second half progressed, both teams had promising moments to shift the tide of the game.
With twenty minutes to go, Page swiveled in the YC box and rattled a low effort at goal, with Tom Dawson saving expertly.
In the 83rd minute, Page was at the heart of West End’s play again. The number ten eased past several Prudhoe players but dragged his final effort and hit Dawson’s left post.
Just before the end of normal time, the YC had two attacks of their own. Both Billy Foster and Sam Davidson narrowly failed to get the final touch to snatch a second goal, after a teasing cross by Law.
Shortly after, Law cut inside from the right of West End’s box and had a powerful shot on goal blocked by the home team’s defence.
The draw sees Prudhoe maintain their unbeaten record in the league. Next Saturday the YC return to Essity Park as they welcome Jarrow FC.
