Goals from Mackenzie Sharpe and Mechack Kanda in the opening 20 minutes of the match proved too much for the YC to overcome in a lacklustre performance from the away side.
The visitors came into the first round fixture in fine form after thrashing Bedlington Terriers 4-0 at the weekend. As for The Bay, the home team looked to bounce back from a 4-1 loss against Newcastle Blue Star.
Despite an initially fast opening for Prudhoe, Whitley Bay gained a foothold in the tie at the 10 minute mark. Jake Forster worked his way into the box before laying the ball to Sharpe, who rattled his strike back across goal into the bottom left corner.
Eight minutes later, the home side scored a second to take the tie away from the YC. Josh Stewart’s corner eventually found Kanda, with the forward’s low strike too powerful for Tom Dawson to keep out of the Prudhoe net.
Just before half time, the YC nearly brought one back in freak circumstances. Lucca Taylor’s lofted ball caused confusion in The Bay’s backline, resulting in a last-ditch clearance at the goal mouth.
Early into the second period, Whitley Bay nearly found a third goal. A strong save from Dawson stopped Kanda from securing his brace, following a threaded pass by Alfa Djalo.
Throughout the half Prudhoe struggled to gather any momentum to unlock Whitley Bay’s defence and reduce the deficit.
The home side almost added to the scoreline with a string of chances in the final five minutes, however Dawson kept the opposition’s attack at bay.
After an underwhelming performance at the coast, Prudhoe will hope to maintain their strong form in the league. The YC face Sunderland West End away from home on Friday night.
